2008 Tournament Misc

Invitation Letter

Dear Family and Friends,

We are fast approaching our fourth annual charity bocce tournament, scheduled for Sunday, October 12.  Last year we raised $34,000 for Alzheimer's Research at McLean Hospital.  Because of your generous contribution, McLean Hospital was able to acquire an additional $300,000 in grant money.

It seems that time passes so quickly but yet so much can happen in the matter of a year.  We started 2008 in the emergency room of Massachusetts General Hospital with our Dad in serious condition.  His kidneys were failing.  In the midst of fear and apprehension we were told he needed to start dialysis immediately.  Through the excellent care of Dr. Leslie Fang of MGH, our Dad is living a better quality life.

We are asking for your support again this year as we raise money to benefit the research of Herbert Y. Lin, M.D., Ph.D., F ASN, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Lin states that our "fundraiser will help...perform laboratory experiments whose aims are to better understand iron handling in a way which....will lead to new therapies for anemia of chronic kidney disease...My research in iron metabolism and chronic kidney disease is new, and has the potential to provide a real ‘paradigm’ shift in the way we think of and may eventually treat, anemia of chronic kidney disease.  In addition, this research may have implications for the treatment of anemia of other diseases such as cancer and arthritis."

Without research and development in all fields of medical care we cannot save and improve the life of so many that are suffering.  We hope you will be so kind and donate.  Your continued support gives us the opportunity to help each other for we never know when we or someone we love will benefit from that research.

It may difficult to donate in these uncertain economic times but the need for medical care does not subside.  We humbly request your consideration and financial support for with the collective donations of many we can make a difference.

We pray that God protects us and gives us the strength to face all of life's challenges.

With Grateful Hearts,

The Martignetti Family

Opening Speech

Good Morning to Everyone:

If you don't mind, I have a few words I would like to say. From the bottom of my heart (as well as my wife's who is not here today and I miss so much), we thank all of you for being here today. You're not here today for a Christmas Party, an open house or for a family celebration...you are here to support my family who have organized this event in which the proceeds will benefit kidney research at Massachusetts General Hospital. Thanks to my children, grandchildren and in laws for organizing this event. Thank you to Dr. Fang and Dr. Lin for all of your support. It's an honor to have Dr. Lin here with us today. In the past, our annual fund raising bocce tournaments have benefited various organizations. As I've already mentioned, this year's proceeds will benefit kidney research at Massachusetts General Hospital. The reason my children chose this is because I am the boy with the sick kidney. Thank you for all the support, love and affection you've shown to me. I thank God for giving me what money cannot buy. With my experience, I've come to realize that with the new technology and excellent doctors we have today, it is worth living even when you are sick. I hope you all enjoy the day.... my wife, my entire family and I love you all.

Where the Money is Going

Patients who develop chronic kidney disease also develop severe anemia, which leads to fatigue (the feeling of being tired all the time), and in patients who also have heart disease can lead to ischemia. One major reason for the anemia is due to the IMPROPER handling of iron, an essential component of red blood cells. Dr. Lin’s laboratory has recently discovered the key to understanding how iron is properly handled in the body, and they are working on exciting research to help restore the body's ability to use iron in a normal manner, and thus treat the anemia that is seen in patients with chronic kidney disease. Proceeds from the Martignetti Family Charity Bocce Tournament will help Dr. Lin’s laboratory at MGH perform experiments whose aims are to better understand iron handling in a way which hopefully will lead to new therapies for anemia of chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Lin attended Harvard College, with an AB degree in Biochemical Sciences. He also attended HarvardMedicalSchool and MIT Health Sciences Division where he received his MD. Dr. Lin was trained by Dr. Leslie Fang (our Nonno’s doctor!)during his internship, residency, and kidney fellowship at Massachusetts GeneralHospital. He worked as the Assistant Professor of Medicine from 1999-2007 at MGH, HarvardMedicalSchool.  Presently he works as the Associated Professor of Medicine at MGH, HarvardMedicalSchool.

Dr. Lin has written over 50 papers in prestigious journals such as Cell, Science, Nature Genetics, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and the Journal of Clinical Investigations. He has issued seven patents, with several applications pending. He is honored as a Member of the American Society of Clinical Investigations, American Board of Internal Medicine, and the Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. Dr. Lin has also received two RO1 independent investigator grants.

“My research in iron metabolism and chronic kidney disease is new, and has
the potential to provide a real "paradigm" shift in the way that we think of,
and may eventually treat, anemia of chronic kidney disease.  In addition, this
research may have implications for the treatment of anemia of other diseases,
such as cancer and arthritis”
